PLATFORM
Our partner was the African American Arts + Culture Complex (AAACC). Platform was an initiative to build a parklet in order to activate the first floor of the AAACC and to increase community resilience in the Western Addition.
OUR OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT IS: How might we increase every day community resilience in the Western Addition? In terms of the AAACC, resilience means having broader reach into the Western Addition community. Our goal is to apply thoughtful design to create a connection between street, sidewalk and Center, in an effort to foster this neighborhood resilience. The relationship between resilience and well-being is mutual; each reinforce the other.
MY ROLE IN PLATFORM involved collaborating with team members to develop the Fellows Program, creating a visual identity, and assuming the team lead through the synthesis stage. I was also responsible for managing the grant writing process and editing the grant drafts. In this role I developed knowledge of complex organizational systems. This role also helped me develop effective and empowered communication, and allowed me to exhibit and evolve my skills of developing story content.

MOVERS & SHAKERS
WE IMPLEMENTED THE 8 WEEK DESIGN FELLOWS PROGRAM by building design fundamentals in three phases with the fellows – research, through walking tours and mapping locations of interests; then interviews, which provided us with valuable insights on how these spaces could look and feel. From these interviews we synthesized the insights with the youth. Next was creating – the fellows made mood boards that were translated into business origami, architectural legos and cardbord prototypes.
Once we had a clear vision of what this future could look like and incorporated feedback from the community, we created both a small scale architectural model and a began prototyping a full scale parklet prototype. We had two prototyping events with the community and stakeholders.
